Abstract

ABSTRACT

Low student learning outcomes in the topic of Indonesian cultural diversity indicate that classroom instruction has not yet effectively connected conceptual knowledge with students’ real-life experiences. This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model in improving the learning outcomes of fourth-grade students at SD Kristen Kaiwatu on the topic of Indonesian cultural diversity. The study employed a Classroom Action Research design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, implemented over two cycles consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 32 fourth-grade students. The instructional intervention incorporated the seven essential components of CTL, namely constructivism, inquiry, questioning, learning community, modeling, reflection, and authentic assessment. Data were collected through classroom observations, learning achievement tests, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. The findings revealed a consistent improvement in students’ learning outcomes, as demonstrated by the increase in classical learning mastery from 9% in the pre-action stage to 53% in Cycle I and ultimately 100% in Cycle II. The class average score also improved from 64 at baseline to 70 in Cycle I and 79 in Cycle II. These findings indicate that the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning model not only enhanced students’ conceptual understanding but also fostered psychomotor skills and positive learning attitudes through meaningful contextual learning experiences. Therefore, the CTL model can be considered an effective instructional alternative for teaching Social Studies, particularly the topic of Indonesian cultural diversity in elementary schools.
