Abstract

ABSTRACT

The increasingly intensive use of smartphones among adolescents may contribute to nomophobia, defined as anxiety experienced when individuals are unable to use or are separated from their smartphones. This study aimed to describe the level of nomophobia among students at SMA Negeri 8 Makassar, both overall and across four nomophobia aspects. This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design. The respondents were 92 students from grades X, XI, and XII, selected from three classes through purposive sampling based on preliminary survey findings and information from guidance and counseling teachers. All students in the selected classes were then included using total sampling. Data were collected using a Nomophobia Scale developed by the researcher based on Yildirim’s four aspects and had met validity and reliability criteria. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations. The results showed that 77.2% of students were in the moderate to very high nomophobia categories, with the high category representing the largest group. The aspect of giving up convenience had the highest mean score. These findings provide preliminary information for guidance and counseling teachers in developing services that support students’ self-awareness and healthier smartphone use.
