The increasing number of environmental problems indicates that education needs to provide learning experiences that foster concern and responsibility for environmental sustainability. One approach is to utilize local wisdom as a source of values and knowledge derived from the lived experiences of communities. The Tengger community is known for maintaining a close relationship with nature through customary values, conservation practices, and traditions passed down from generation to generation. This study aims to analyze the ecological wisdom of the Tengger community as a conceptual foundation for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design in Jetak Village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency, Indonesia. Participants were purposively selected based on their knowledge of and involvement in community life and consisted of the Village Head, Village Secretary, and customary/community leaders. Data were collected through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), interviews, observation, and documentation, and were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed three main themes: the relationship between humans and nature as an integral part of community life, environmental conservation practices embedded in customary values and traditions, and the intergenerational transmission of ecological values through social participation, traditions, and community institutions. These three findings were synthesized into a conceptual framework for ESD based on the ecological wisdom of the Tengger community, connecting human–nature relationships, environmental conservation, and the transmission of local values with the development of ecological awareness, responsibility, and sustainable action. This conceptual framework provides a foundation for developing contextual sustainable education by utilizing local wisdom as a source of values and knowledge.
