Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of expressive writing in reducing self-criticism among members of the Universe Crew dance community in Palembang City. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The participants were 30 active members of Universe Crew who met the study criteria. The expressive writing intervention was administered over four days in four sessions, with 10–15 minutes of writing in each session. Self-criticism was measured using the Forms of Self-Criticising/Attacking and Self-Reassuring Scale (FSCRS), consisting of three subscales: inadequate self, hated self, and reassured self. Data were examined using the Shapiro-Wilk test for distributional assessment, followed by paired-samples t-tests for subscales meeting the normality assumption and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for the subscale that did not meet the assumption. The results showed that the mean score of inadequate self decreased from 18.20 to 13.13 and hated self decreased from 7.93 to 5.03, whereas reassured self increased from 17.23 to 21.60. Hypothesis testing indicated significant differences across all three subscales, with p < 0.001. These findings indicate changes in self-criticism following the expressive writing intervention among Universe Crew dance community members. However, because the study used a one-group design without a control group, the changes should be interpreted with consideration of other factors that may have occurred during the study period.
