Abstract

Emerging adulthood is a developmental stage characterized by various demands and challenges in academic, occupational, and social domains. These conditions may give rise to self-criticism, which refers to an individual’s tendency to criticize themselves when experiencing failure or discrepancies between expectations and reality. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-criticism and psychological well-being among emerging adults. The participants consisted of 323 individuals aged 18–25 years residing in Jakarta. This study employed a quantitative approach using purposive sampling, and data were collected online through Google Forms. The instruments used were the Forms of Self-Criticism/Self-Reassuring Scale (FSCRS) and the Psychological Well-Being Short Scale. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s Rank Correlation because the data were not normally distributed. The results showed a significant relationship between self-criticism and psychological well-being (r = 0.486; p = 0.000). The correlation coefficient indicated a moderate positive relationship, suggesting that higher levels of self-criticism were associated with higher levels of psychological well-being. These findings suggest that self-criticism in some emerging adults can function as a form of self-evaluation that encourages self-development and goal achievement, thereby contributing to psychological well-being.
