ABSTRACT
Emotional neglect can reduce the emotional support adolescents need to cope with stress and develop adaptive capacities. This condition highlights the need for Guidance and Counseling services that can strengthen resilience through approaches aligned with students’ needs. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the gratitude journaling technique in improving resilience among students experiencing emotional neglect at SMK Negeri 2 Surabaya. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. Ten male students from the Light Vehicle Engineering Department were selected through purposive sampling based on screening conducted by the Guidance and Counseling teacher and were divided into experimental and control groups, with five students in each group. The experimental group received four group counseling sessions using the gratitude journaling technique, each lasting 90 minutes over two weeks, while the control group received conventional group counseling. Resilience was measured through a pretest and posttest and analyzed using the paired sample t-test, independent sample t-test, N-Gain, and Cohen’s d. The experimental group’s mean score increased from 124.60 to 126.40, but the change was not significant, t(4) = 0.486, p = 0.653. The posttest difference between groups was also not significant, t(8) = 1.375, p = 0.206, with an N-Gain of 0.066 and Cohen’s d of 0.217. Thus, within the context of this study, there was insufficient statistical evidence to conclude that gratitude journaling was effective in improving students’ resilience.
Kelompok eksperimen memperoleh empat sesi konseling kelompok menggunakan teknik gratitude journaling, masing-masing 90 menit selama dua minggu, sedangkan kelompok kontrol memperoleh konseling kelompok konvensional.
