Abstract

In the digital era, university students face challenges from information overload that triggers an instant sharing culture without verification, exacerbated by the misuse of generative artificial intelligence that erodes independent thinking. This study aims to analyze the influence of attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control on students' critical thinking behavior through behavioral intention as a mediating variable, using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework. Utilizing an explanatory quantitative approach, data were gathered from 297 undergraduate Office Administration Education students at Universitas Negeri Surabaya through Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) via SmartPLS 4. The results demonstrate that attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control have positive and significant effects on behavioral intention. Behavioral intention is also proven to have a positive and significant direct effect on actual critical thinking behavior, while fully mediating the relationships of the three independent variables. However, subjective norms do not directly influence actual critical thinking behavior. In conclusion, social expectations and self-efficacy will only effectively transform into actual critical thinking actions if they are first internalized into a strong cognitive intention. These findings offer crucial implications for departments to reconstruct problem-based curricula to stimulate students' critical mental disposition.
