Abstract

ABSTRACT

Scientific literacy skills among Indonesian students remain relatively low based on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), even though chemistry learning requires scientific thinking and problem-solving abilities. Previous studies have mostly examined the effect of problem-based learning on scientific literacy or learning outcomes separately, while the direct relationship between these two variables has rarely been investigated. Therefore, this study is important to strengthen empirical evidence regarding the relationship between scientific literacy and chemistry learning outcomes through problem-based learning. This study aimed to determine students’ scientific literacy levels, chemistry learning outcomes, and the relationship between both variables at SMA Negeri 1 Unaaha. The study employed a quantitative approach with a bivariate correlational design. The sample consisted of 27 students of class XI MIPA 2 selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a scientific literacy questionnaire and a chemistry learning outcomes test, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The results showed that students’ scientific literacy was categorized as high with a mean score of 78.61, while chemistry learning outcomes were also categorized as high with an average score of 71.06. The correlation analysis produced a coefficient value of 0.725 with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a positive and significant relationship between scientific literacy and students’ chemistry learning outcomes.

Kemampuan literasi sains peserta didik di Indonesia masih tergolong rendah berdasarkan hasil Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), padahal pembelajaran kimia menuntut kemampuan berpikir ilmiah dan pemecahan masalah. Penelitian sebelumnya lebih banyak membahas pengaruh pembelajaran berbasis masalah terhadap literasi sains atau hasil belajar secara terpisah, sehingga hubungan langsung antara kedua variabel tersebut masih jarang dikaji. Penelitian ini penting dilakukan untuk memperkuat bukti empiris mengenai hubungan literasi sains dan hasil belajar kimia melalui pembelajaran berbasis masalah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat literasi sains siswa, hasil belajar kimia, serta hubungan antara kedua variabel tersebut di SMA Negeri 1 Unaaha. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional bivariat. Sampel penelitian terdiri atas 27 siswa kelas XI MIPA 2 yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Data diperoleh melalui angket literasi sains dan tes hasil belajar kimia, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan uji korelasi Pearson Product Moment. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa literasi sains siswa berada pada kategori tinggi dengan rata-rata 78,61 dan hasil belajar kimia juga berada pada kategori tinggi dengan rata-rata 71,06. Uji korelasi menghasilkan koefisien 0,725 dengan signifikansi 0,000 < 0,05, sehingga terdapat hubungan positif dan signifikan antara literasi sains dan hasil belajar kimia siswa.
