Abstract

Traditional markets are not merely places of trade but also living spaces where communities interact, share stories, and construct cultural identity. Revitalization programs are often implemented to provide a more modern appearance; however, in practice, many fail to fully address the actual needs of their users. This study focuses on the Bersehati Market in Manado as a case study to examine how government-led revitalization has affected the market’s function as a public space. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews with vendors, buyers, and architectural experts, as well as visual documentation. The analysis was conducted using normative criticism, which evaluates aspects of function, aesthetics, social ethics, culture, and sustainability, and phenomenological criticism, which emphasizes the multisensory experiences of users. The findings reveal that the revitalization successfully highlights local cultural identity through a Bentenan-patterned façade. Nevertheless, several critical issues remain unaddressed, including sanitation, circulation, and spatial comfort. From the users’ perspective, the market retains its vibrancy and colorful atmosphere, yet it often proves physically exhausting. Synthesizing the two approaches demonstrates a gap between the market’s modernized appearance and the lived spatial realities that remain problematic. This study underscores the importance of pursuing market revitalization that is not only visually appealing but also inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of the community.

ABSTRAK
Pasar tradisional tidak hanya menjadi tempat jual beli, tetapi juga ruang hidup tempat masyarakat berinteraksi, berbagi cerita, dan membangun identitas budaya. Revitalisasi pasar sering kali dilakukan untuk memberi wajah baru yang lebih modern, namun kenyataannya banyak yang belum sepenuhnya menjawab kebutuhan nyata para penggunanya. Penelitian ini berfokus pada Pasar Bersehati Manado sebagai obyek studi kasus untuk melihat bagaimana revitalisasi yang dilakukan pemerintah setempat berdampak pada fungsi pasar sebagai ruang publik. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui observasi lapangan, wawancara dengan pedagang, pembeli, pakar arsitektur, serta dokumentasi visual. Analisis dilakukan melalui kritik normatif yang mengkaji penilaian terhadap fungsi, estetika, etika sosial, budaya, dan keberlanjutan, serta kritik fenomenologis yang menekankan pengalaman multisensori pengguna. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa revitalisasi berhasil menampilkan identitas budaya lokal lewat fasad bermotif Bentenan. Namun, masih ada beberapa aspek yang perlu diperhatikan seperti persoalan sanitasi, sirkulasi, dan kenyamanan ruang yang belum terpenuhi. Dari pengalaman pengguna, pasar tetap terasa hidup dan penuh warna, tetapi sering kali melelahkan secara fisik. Sintesis kedua pendekatan ini menunjukkan adanya kesenjangan antara wajah pasar yang tampak modern dengan kenyataan ruang yang masih penuh tantangan. Penelitian ini menegaskan pentingnya menghadirkan revitalisasi pasar yang bukan hanya indah dipandang, melainkan juga ramah, inklusif, dan berkelanjutan bagi masyarakat.
