Abstract

A number of stressors cause stress in university students' lives. Stress might not be harmful if experienced at a tolerable intensity and for a short duration. Therefore, it is imperative to tackle stress effectively and efficiently. There are several ways to manage stress, including counsellor involvement. However, managing stress independently can reduce both cost and time consumption. Aromatherapy is one such method. This study focused on the use of scented aromatherapy candles. The research employed a within-subjects experimental methodology in which a group of participants were tested before and after the intervention. Participants were selected using purposive sampling and were active students in their final year of study. The intervention involved using scented aromatherapy candles for seven consecutive days, with 30 minutes of exposure each day. The experiment aimed to reduce participants' academic stress. The participants comprised two males and eight females who were active students in their sixth and eighth semesters when the research was conducted in July 2025. They ranged in age from 19 to 22 years old. The study showed no significant difference in overall stress levels amongst participants before and after the intervention. However, the research found that there was indeed a difference in the stress reaction dimension before and after the therapy. Specifically, there was a decrease in stress levels in the cognitive sub-dimension following the aromatherapy intervention.

ABSTRAK

Dalam kehidupan mahasiswa, terdapat banyak stressor yang akan menimbulkan stres. Stres bukanlah hal yang buruk jika dialami dalam intensitas yang sedang dan tidak dalam rentang waktu yang lama. Untuk itu kondisi stres perlu penanganan yang tepat dan harus dihilangkan dengan segera sebelum menjadi lebih parah. Penanganan stres dapat dilakukan dengan berbagai cara, termasuk dengan melibatkan konselor. Namun penanganan stres juga dapat dilakukan secara mandiri yang tentunya menjadi lebih hemat biaya dan waktu. Penanganan stres ini di antarnya adalah dengan menggunakan aromaterapi. Pada penelitian ini digunakan aromaterapi dari lilin dengan wewangian tertentu. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah experiment within subject, di mana sekelompok partisipan akan diuji sebelum dan setelah intervensi. Partisipan dipilih secara purposive yaitu mahasiswa aktif kuliah dan berada pada tahun terakhir masa kuliahnya. Intervensi dilakukan dengan lilin aromaterapi selama tujuh hari berturut-turut dengan durasi 30 menit setiap harinya. Diharapkan dengan mengikuti eksperimen ini para partisipan dapat mengurangi stres akademiknya di periode akhir penelitian. Partisipan penelitian ini berjumlah 10 orang, yang terdiri dari dua orang laki-laki dan 8 orang perempuan. Mereka adalah mahasiswa aktif yang berada pada semester keenam dan semester kedelapan pada saat penelitian diselenggarakan yaitu pada bulan Juli 2025. Usia partisipan antara 19 sampai 22 tahun. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan tidak ada perbedaan signifikan stres akademi mahasiswa sebelum dan setelah melakukan aroma terapi. Namun pada dimensi reaksi stres ada perbedaan antara sebelum dan setelah terapi. Khususnya pada sub-dimensi kognitif terjadi penurunan Tingkat stres sebelum dan setelah aroma terapi.
