Abstract

Parasocial relationships on social media have become an increasingly prominent phenomenon in digital communication. However, to date, no instrument specifically designed to measure parasocial relationships in the social media context has been validated in Indonesian. This study aimed to examine the construct validity of the Indonesian version of the Parasocial Relationship in Social Media Survey (PRISM). This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design involving 307 participants who actively used social media and followed a media figure. The research procedure included instrument adaptation into Indonesian, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), internal reliability testing, convergent validity analysis using Average Variance Extracted (AVE), internal discriminant validity analysis using the Heterotrait-Monotrait Ratio (HTMT), and external validity testing using the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS) and UCLA Loneliness Version 3 (UCLA LV3). The results showed that the initial PRISM model did not meet the model fit criteria. After model modification, the fit indices reached a marginal yet acceptable level (CFI = 0.936, TLI = 0.925, RMSEA = 0.059). Nevertheless, several items showed low factor loadings, the AVE values indicated weak internal convergent validity, and internal discriminant validity was not consistently supported across factors. These findings suggest that the Indonesian version of PRISM is not yet fully adequate for direct use and still requires further item refinement and adaptation to better fit the Indonesian language context.
