ABSTRACT
The spiritual approach is a supportive therapeutic strategy that emphasizes the internalization of belief, religious, and cultural values through practices such as prayer and meditation. In the context of manic-type schizoaffective disorder, this approach is considered relevant as it addresses the psychological and existential aspects of patients that are not fully accommodated by pharmacological therapy, thereby strengthening coping mechanisms and emotional stabilization. This article aims to describe the role of a spiritual approach in managing manic-type schizoaffective disorder with severe stressors. The method used is a case report of a 26-year-old female patient who underwent hospitalization with a diagnosis of manic-type schizoaffective disorder. The patient exhibited psychotic symptoms including visual hallucinations, increased energy, reduced need for sleep, grandiosity, and excessive speech, which were further complicated by legal issues. The treatment was conducted over 14 days, combining conventional therapy with a spiritual approach in the form of prayer and meditation facilitated by the patient’s family from day 8 to day 14. Clinical evaluation showed a reduction in the intensity of psychotic symptoms and improved self-control following the implementation of the spiritual intervention as an adjunct therapy. The findings suggest that a spiritual approach can be considered as part of a comprehensive intervention for patients with manic-type schizoaffective disorder and severe stressors, particularly as a supportive psychosocial component integrated with primary medical treatment. These findings highlight the importance of integrating spiritual approaches as complementary therapy to support holistic mental health recovery.
