Abstract

Young adults often encounter various developmental demands and new experiences that may be associated with the emergence of the impostor phenomenon. This phenomenon describes a condition in which individuals experience difficulty internalizing their achievements and tend to doubt their own abilities despite having objective evidence of competence. One psychological factor that is considered to be related to this phenomenon is self-esteem, which refers to an individual's evaluation of their own worth and competence. Although the relationship between self-esteem and impostor phenomenon has been widely examined among university students, studies involving a broader young adult population with diverse characteristics in Indonesia remain limited. This study aimed to examine the ability of self-esteem to predict the tendency of impostor phenomenon among young adults. This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, involving 211 young adults aged 18–29 years. Data were collected using the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and analyzed using simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that self-esteem significantly predicted the impostor phenomenon in a negative direction. Individuals with higher levels of self-esteem tended to show lower tendencies of impostor phenomenon. These findings indicate that self-esteem is one of the psychological factors associated with the occurrence of impostor phenomenon, although other factors may also contribute to this phenomenon. This study contributes to expanding the understanding of the role of self-evaluation in explaining the tendency of impostor phenomenon among young adults in Indonesia.
