ABSTRACT
Sportswear is no longer viewed solely as apparel for physical activities but has increasingly become part of consumers’ lifestyles and a means of expressing personal identity. This shift in function creates opportunities for spontaneous purchasing when product appeal intersects with emotional impulses and consumer characteristics. This study examines whether impulsive buying tendencies toward sportswear differ between male and female young adults in Padang City. A total of 299 participants, comprising 134 males and 165 females, were recruited through purposive sampling in a quantitative study with a comparative design. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring the cognitive and affective aspects of impulsive buying and were subsequently compared using an Independent Samples t-Test. A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups, t(297) = 6.743, p < 0.001. Male participants obtained a higher mean impulsive buying score (M = 63.32) than female participants (M = 53.07). This pattern suggests that impulsive purchasing tendencies cannot be separated from the specific product context encountered by consumers. Accordingly, gender should not be treated as a uniform predictor across all consumption situations. These findings contribute to consumer psychology research on product-specific impulse buying and offer practical considerations for developing more context-sensitive sportswear marketing strategies, particularly in consumer segmentation.
