Abstract

ABSTRACT

Increasing competency demands in the labor market and broader opportunities for higher education have made career choices among vocational high school students increasingly complex. Therefore, understanding students' career interests is essential to support effective career planning. This study aimed to describe the career interests of students at SMK Negeri 1 Padang after graduation, particularly their interest in pursuing higher education or entering the workforce directly. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed. The population consisted of 380 twelfth-grade students, while 195 respondents were selected through a two-stage sampling procedure consisting of purposive sampling to determine respondent criteria and proportionate stratified random sampling to ensure proportional representation across study programs. Data were collected using a valid and reliable Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean scores, percentages, and the Respondent Achievement Level (Tingkat Capaian Responden). The findings indicate that students tend to prefer pursuing higher education rather than entering the workforce immediately. Interest in higher education is primarily influenced by internal factors, whereas interest in working is mainly driven by rational considerations. These findings provide empirical evidence on vocational students' career orientations and the dominant factors influencing their decisions, offering practical implications for strengthening career guidance services and vocational education policies to better prepare graduates for higher education and employment.
