Abstract

Corruption remains a serious issue in Indonesia, as reflected in the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International, where Indonesia scored 37 out of 100 and ranked 99th out of 180 countries. This study aims to examine the relationship between perceived behavioral control (PBC) and the intention to engage in corruption, as well as to explore the mediating role of moral disengagement. A quantitative approach was employed using convenience sampling, involving 348 active students from public and private universities in Surabaya. The instruments used were standardized scales that had been tested for validity and reliability to measure PBC, corruption intention, and moral disengagement. Data analysis was conducted using Hayes' PROCESS Macro in SPSS, including outlier testing, residual normality, linearity, one-sample t-tests, and mediation analysis through bootstrapping. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between PBC and corruption intention (? = 0.279; p < 0.001), as well as a significant indirect effect through moral disengagement (? = 0.223; p < 0.000; 95% CI [0.135–0.320]). These findings indicate that moral disengagement plays a crucial role in mediating the effect of PBC on the intention to engage in corruption, highlighting the importance of moral awareness enhancement in anti-corruption education efforts.
