Abstract

Final-year students often encounter academic obstacles in completing their thesis, one of which is academic procrastination that may lead to delayed graduation. One internal factor presumed to influence academic procrastination is self-control. This study aimed to examine the role of self-control in predicting academic procrastination among final-year students at Universitas Negeri Padang. The study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 136 students in the ninth semester or above who were currently working on their thesis, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using Likert-based self-control and academic procrastination scales. Data analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4 software. The results showed that self-control had a negative and significant role in predicting academic procrastination, with a path coefficient of -0.691 and a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05). The R² value of 0.478 indicated that self-control explained 47.8% of the variance in academic procrastination. In addition, most respondents were categorized as having high academic procrastination and moderate self-control. These findings indicate that the higher the students’ self-control, the lower their tendency to engage in academic procrastination. Therefore, strengthening self-control through time management, self-regulation, and academic mentoring should be considered as an effort to reduce academic procrastination among final-year students.
