Abstract

ABSTRACT

The Kahar Muzakkar movement is one of the significant events in the history of South Sulawesi that not only left political legacies but also shaped social memories that continue to be transmitted across generations. This study aims to analyze how communities in Bulukumba and Sinjai construct collective memory regarding the Kahar Muzakkar movement and how experiences of conflict have shaped social trauma and collective identity within local communities. The research employs a qualitative method with an oral history approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with informants who directly experienced or inherited stories about the Kahar Muzakkar movement, supported by historical archives and relevant scholarly literature. The data were analyzed through processes of reduction, categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing to identify patterns in the production and reproduction of collective memory. The findings reveal that collective memory is formed through family narratives, oral traditions, and community experiences that preserve memories of fear, loss, restrictions on social activities, and pressures from both armed groups and state security forces. In Bulukumba, collective memory is predominantly characterized by experiences of trauma and insecurity, whereas in Sinjai more diverse memories emerge, including interpretations related to struggle and religious identity. These findings demonstrate that collective memory does not merely record past events but also shapes how communities understand history, power relations, and their social identities. This study concludes that the Kahar Muzakkar movement continues to exist within the social memory structure of local communities and contributes to the development of studies on collective memory, social trauma, and oral history in Indonesia.

ABSTRAK

Gerakan Kahar Muzakkar merupakan salah satu peristiwa penting dalam sejarah Sulawesi Selatan yang tidak hanya meninggalkan jejak politik, tetapi juga membentuk ingatan sosial masyarakat yang terus diwariskan antargenerasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana masyarakat Bulukumba dan Sinjai membangun memori kolektif mengenai gerakan Kahar Muzakkar serta bagaimana pengalaman konflik tersebut membentuk trauma sosial dan identitas kolektif masyarakat lokal. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan sejarah lisan. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap informan yang mengalami langsung maupun mewarisi cerita tentang masa gerakan Kahar Muzakkar, serta didukung oleh arsip sejarah dan literatur ilmiah yang relevan. Data dianalisis melalui proses reduksi, kategorisasi, interpretasi, dan penarikan kesimpulan untuk mengidentifikasi pola produksi dan reproduksi memori kolektif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa memori kolektif masyarakat terbentuk melalui narasi keluarga, cerita lisan, dan pengalaman komunitas yang merekam ketakutan, kehilangan, pembatasan aktivitas sosial, serta tekanan dari kelompok bersenjata maupun aparat negara. Di Bulukumba, memori kolektif lebih didominasi oleh pengalaman trauma dan ketidakamanan, sedangkan di Sinjai berkembang memori yang lebih beragam, termasuk pemaknaan terhadap aspek perjuangan dan identitas keagamaan. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa memori kolektif tidak sekadar merekam peristiwa masa lalu, tetapi juga membentuk cara masyarakat memahami sejarah, relasi kekuasaan, dan identitas mereka. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa gerakan Kahar Muzakkar terus hidup dalam struktur memori sosial masyarakat dan memberikan kontribusi pada pengembangan kajian memori kolektif, trauma sosial, dan sejarah lisan di Indonesia.
