Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in shaping a generation that is ready to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Integrating the SDGs into the high school biology curriculum in Indonesia is particularly important given the complex environmental and social challenges, such as biodiversity decline, that require scientific understanding and concrete action. This research aims to synthesize and interpret various studies to understand how project-based learning (PBL) can be effectively implemented in high school Biology to support the success of the SDGs. A qualitative meta-synthesis method was used, following Noblit and Hare's (1988) six-stage framework, allowing us to go beyond conventional summaries to build a new conceptual framework. The results of an in-depth analysis of 17 relevant journal articles consistently showed that PBL is a significant effective strategy in integrating the SDGs into learning. PBL markedly contributes to improving the understanding of SDGs-related Biology concepts, as well as developing pro-sustainability attitudes and 21st century skills such as problem solving and innovation. Although this study confirmed the positive impact of PBL, the need for further empirical studies in the specific context of high school Biology in Indonesia remains. These results become the state of the art by affirming the role of PBL as an important tool to equip the younger generation with the knowledge, skills, and knowledge of the SDGs.
