Abstract

ABSTRACT

Vocalist identity develops not merely from musical ability but through the intersection of personal experience, social surroundings, and performance situations. This study examines the formation of Lanang Bujana’s identity as the vocalist of Semaya Koplo, focusing on the factors shaping his identity, the process through which it is constructed, and the ways in which it is represented before audiences. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed in Seraya Village, Karangasem, Bali, with Lanang serving as the primary informant and the group manager, band members, close associates, and audience members serving as supporting informants selected purposively. Data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that musical experience provides the initial foundation, while audience interaction, recognition from the musical group, and the use of verbal and nonverbal symbols shape Lanang’s identity as a communicative vocalist who maintains close relationships with audiences. This construction develops through externalization, objectivation, and internalization, while its representation is negotiated through appearance, musical style, and stage communication. Differences between everyday behavior and stage performance reveal adjustments between the front stage and backstage without eliminating his personal character. Vocalist identity in this context is therefore a dynamic, performative social process rooted in the local cultural context.
